I am full professor of Informatics in the University of Roma "Tor Vergata", affiliated with the Department of Mathematics, which appears in many top rank lists of research institutes, both Italian (it has been evaluated Excellent in the National ranking VQR 2004-2010) and international (see, e.g., the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017 - Mathematics). Within the last National ranking (VQR 2011-2014), the Department of Mathematics got the first place among the large Departments of Mathematics in Italy. Moreover, it has been awarded a government grant in the framework of the national program 2018-2022 for "Departments of Excellence", ranking first in the panel Mathematics.

I am coordinating since April 2014 the project Programma il Futuro for the introduction of basic concepts of informatics as a scientific subject in Italian schools, with emphasis on primary schools and on computational thinking. It is a joint project bewteen the Italian Ministry of Education and the National Laboratory Informatics and School of CINI (the Italian national inter-university Consortium for Informatics), which has been officially launched on September 2014. Since its inception, the project has led about three million italian students (half of them in primary schools) to start learning the principles of informatics. The project was selected in 2016 as one of the best 4 projects of the category "Digital for School" in the Digital Skill Awards competition, managed by the Directorate‑General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission, which received 258 applications.
More recently, the project has been recognized in April 2022 as the best initiative in the category "School Education" in the 1st Italian National Prize for Digital Competences, managed by the Department for Digital Transformation of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and has been awarded a special mention for having been the most voted by the public among the 22 finalist projects, selected among the 120 submitted ones.
Additionally, in June 2022, the Laboratory Informatics and School of CINI has been awarded the title of Innovation Champion assigned by the COTEC Foundation, under the patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, to 45 institutions, companies and persons who distinguished themselves for the originality of their action, in any field.

In April 2022 I have received the prize "Associazione Rita Levi-Montalcini", awarded by the Italian National Association of School Principals to scientists and researchers who have excelled in disseminating scientific culture in school.

Since March 2017 I am the Director of the CINI's National Laboratory on Informatics and School, which I have founded, working on all issues related to Informatics as a scientific discipline in school.

I have been (2018-2023) the President of Informatics Europe, the association of informatics departments and research laboratories in Europe and neighbouring areas. I am currently ex-officio member of its Board of Directors as Past President.

I have been (2009-2015) in the Board of Directors of Informatics Europe, the association of informatics departments and research laboratories in Europe and neighbouring areas, serving also as Treasurer (2012-13) and Vice-President (2014-15) of the association.

I have been (July 2015 - June 2019) an elected member of the ACM Europe Council, comprised of European computer scientists committed to fostering the visibility and relevance of the Association for Computing Machinery in Europe. From July 2019 until December 2023 I have been the liaison between the ACM Europe Council and Informatics Europe.

In 2021 I have been member of the ACM Nomination Committee, which selects candidates for the ACM officer positions and for the Members-at-Large of the ACM Council and presents the actual slate of candidates for the ACM General Election of 2022.

Since July 2018 I am member of the ACM Europe Technology Policy Committe, and since April 2023 I am member of the ACM Europe Council Education Committee.

Since 2018 I am a member of the Steering Committee of the Informatics for All coalition, established to advocate for the inclusion of Informatics as a foundational discipline in schools across Europe.
Previously, I have been (2016-2017) member of the Committee on European Computing Education, a working group on Informatics Education in Europe, established as a joint effort by Informatics Europe and the ACM Europe Council. I am also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Hour of Code and CS Ed Week.

I have been (2016-2021) member of the Executive Board of CINI as the representative of my university. Previously, I have been (2013-2015) member of the Executive Board of CINI as a representant of GRIN.

I have been (2013-2016) the Director of the national laboratory InfoLife (Informatics for the Life Sciences) of CINI, the Italian national inter-university Consortium for Informatics.

I have been (2010-2012) the national coordinator of SIMBIOSYS, a two-years research projects on bio-informatics, financed by the italian Ministry of University within the PRIN basic research program.

I have been (2009-2014) in the Executive Board of EQANIE, the European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education, co-founded by GRIN, which I represented in the General Assembly.

I have been (2003-2008) the President of GRIN (Gruppo di Informatica), the Italian Association of University Professors of Informatics. Some of my contributions during these years.

In June-July 2007 the Academy of Finland has invited me and seven other international Informatics experts to evaluate Computer Science research in Finland in years 2000-2006. In October 2013 the University of Eastern Finland has invited me and five other international scientist to evaluate research in the Faculty of Science and Forestry in years 2010-2012, within their overall 2013 Research Assessment Exercise.

My current research interests include informatics education and information systems. I have been active also in algorithms and data structures, databases and geographical information systems, tools and environments for interaction with information systems, cooperative and distributed information systems, and bio-informatics; doing also some experiments with digital art.
